Singin in the Rain

In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item but, behind the scenes, things aren't always as they appear on the big screen! Meanwhile, Lina's squeaky voice might be the end of her career in "talking pictures" without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her.

Filled with every memorable moment from the film and a downpour of unforgettable songs, Singin' in the Rain is a guaranteed hit for any theatre. The technical elements can be challenging but well worth the effort when the audience is left leaping to their feet. Three extrodinary roles for dancers and a tour de force comedic turn make this a perfect choice for any theatre with an abundance of talent ready to shine.

1890s. The play opens in a large yellow room, in a country mansion on the East Coast. It turns out that Charlotte, a young woman who has just given birth to her first child, is suffering from some kind of post-partum disorder, and she is to be confined here until she recovers. She’s hesitant, but her husband John and sister-in-law Mary are firm: it’s doctor’s orders. She’s not allowed to see her baby.

That night, while the rest of the house sleeps, Charlotte is convinced that she sees something moving inside the yellow wall – something that almost looks like a woman. But, the next morning, she dismisses it from her mind and focuses on getting better. The days turn into weeks, the weeks into months; the confinement slowly turns into a prison sentence. Finally driven insane by her forced separation from her baby, Charlotte snaps and attacks her husband when he comes in one day – crowing with the final “realization” that she is the woman in the wall. The piece explores the awful impact of solitary confinement on mental health, and particularly the impact of not being heard – themes that seem all the more timely in today’s COVID pandemic.

Over the course of a crazy, starlit dinner party, the wildly unexpected occurs. The couples begin to flirt and insanity reigns.
